Mullin Automotive Museum wins 'Best of Show' at ... - NZ Classic Car

August 29th, 2011 by NZ Classic Car

Peter and Merle Mullin, founders of the world renowned Mullin Automotive Museum, took top honors in winning the ?Best of Show? title at the recent2011 Pebble Beach Concours d?Elegance. The win is their first ?Best of Show? in 27 attempts and it was an impeccably restored 1934 Voisin C-25 Aerodyne that did it.

Created by one of France?s foremost automobile designers, Gabriel Voisin (1880 ? 1973), the Aerodyne is a highlight of design and engineering excellence of the Art Deco era. The Voisin?s streamlined aluminum coachwork features a number of extraordinary details, including the marque?s signature bird-in-flight hood ornament, flowing skirted pontoon fenders and massive retractable arched roof.

The Mullins spent the last six years restoring the vehicle. The Voisin, a first-time entry which initially took top honors in the 1932-1937 European Classic category, is a striking example of vintage French design from manufacturer Avions-Voisin, a company that started initially building aircraft. The company?s first vehicle, the C-2, was unveiled at the Paris motor show in 1920, while the C-25 was launched in Paris more than a decade later. The C-25 is quite indicative Voisin?s roots in aviation, with its sweeping aerodynamic design and abundant use of lightweight alloys.

?Merle and I have envisioned this moment for more than thirty years,? said Peter Mullin, founder of the Museum. ?Thanks to the thousands of tireless hours spent reviving Gabriel Voisin?s monumental work, our greatest aspiration has finally been achieved.?
