SARASOTA COUNTY - Imagine a piece of material split so fine that it is 100,000 times smaller than the width of a single human hair.

That is the minuscule world known as nanoscience that students at New College of Florida will be exploring in the school's new Optical Spectroscopy and Nano-Materials Lab, which was unveiled Friday.

The school plans to use the lab for research in nanotechnology, the science behind the most advanced and compact electronics, and with applications in technology and medical fields.

The lab was funded by a $1.7 million grant from the U.S. Army, making it the largest federal grant in the college's history.

In spectroscopy, scientists shine different forms of light through nano-materials and analyze how the light reflects off or through them to find real-world applications for new combinations of materials.

The lab includes several spectrometers that can analyze different kinds of light, including infrared and laser. The devices cost up to $200,000 each.

"You can deduce some structural information of the materials," said Mariana Sendova, professor of physics at New College.

Sendova said New College students would benefit from being in the only liberal-arts college in the country with such a laboratory.

"They participate actively in research; they get stipends for research in the summer," she said. "They are quoted in articles published in scientific journals and can continue onto graduate school."
