NHL lacks conclusive evidence regarding slur (AP)

NEW YORK ? Wayne Simmonds of the Philadelphia Flyers escaped punishment by the NHL on Tuesday night because the league doesn't have conclusive evidence he directed a homophobic slur at the Rangers' Sean Avery.

Colin Campbell, the league's senior executive vice president of hockey operations and former disciplinarian, said because of "conflicting accounts of what transpired on the ice, we have been unable to substantiate with the necessary degree of certainty what was said and by whom."

Video replay appeared to catch Simmonds making an anti-gay slur against Avery during a preseason game in Philadelphia on Monday night. Avery confirmed that Simmonds made the remark, but Simmonds didn't reveal if he did. However, Campbell said in his statement that Simmonds "expressly denied" making it.

Campbell added that none of the on-ice officials heard any slurs by either player, thus making the NHL unable to take disciplinary action now. He said the league reserves the option to "revisit the matter" should new information be found that conclusively shows a slur was made.

Last week, Simmonds ? who is black ? was involved in another controversy when someone threw a banana on the ice from the stands as he was taking a shootout attempt during a game in London, Ontario.

"All players, coaches and officials in the National Hockey League deserve the respect of their peers, and have the absolute right to function in a work environment that is free from racially or sexually-based innuendo or derision," Campbell said in the statement. "This is the National Hockey League's policy and it will remain so going forward."

Earlier Tuesday, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation called for Simmonds to apologize for the slur and pressed the NHL to educate its fans about such remarks.

"Hate speech and anti-gay slurs have no place on the ice rink," GLAAD acting president Mike Thompson said in a statement. "The word that Simmonds used is the same word that is hurled at LGBT youth on the playground and in our schools, creating a climate of intolerance and hostility.

"He should not only apologize for this anti-gay outburst, but the Philadelphia Flyers and the NHL have a responsibility to take action and educate their fans about why this word is unacceptable."

GLAAD said it has talked to the Flyers and the NHL about what specific steps can be taken. The organization added that it has worked with sports leagues such as the NBA, Major League Baseball, and the WWE to address issues of homophobia in sports.

"It also is important to emphasize that the National Hockey League holds, and will continue to hold, our players to higher standards with respect to their conduct both on and off the ice," Campbell said. "While we recognize that the emotion involved in certain on-ice confrontations may lead to the use of highly charged and sometimes offensive language and commentary, certain lines cannot be crossed.

"We have for many years emphasized to our clubs and players that commentary directed at the race or ethnicity of other participants in the game (or even non-participants), or that is otherwise socially or morally inappropriate or potentially hurtful ? including as it may relate to sexual orientation ? is absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated," he added.

The Kardashians To Cohost 'Today' Next Week

The Kardashians To Cohost 'Today' Next Week

Attention, fans of unintentionally funny TV personalities. We have good news and bad news.

The bad news: Next week, Kathie Lee Gifford won't be in her cohost chair during the fourth hour of NBC's Today.

The good news: Various members of the Kardashian family -- Khloe, Bruce, Kris, Kourtney and Kim -- will take turns filling Gifford's chair alongside Hoda Kotb every day next week!

Is it just us, or is it getting a lot easier to keep up with the Kardashians? You used to have to turn to E! to see America's most glam reality family. But now you can catch them on all the major networks, from CBS's The Talk (Kris) to ABC's Dancing With the Stars (Rob) to Fox's Fox & Friends (Khloe and Kourtney) to NBC's Today (Kris, along with her hubby and her three girls).

It's yet another confirmation that their show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians was merely a launch pad for total media domination. Next up: Kim's Fairytale Wedding (Sunday, Oct. 9, at 8 p.m. ET; and Monday, Oct. 10, at 9 p.m. ET), an E! special chronicling the preparations and nuptials of Kim and new hubby Kris Humphries, which took place last month.

The Today appearances are a means of promoting this wedding special, but don't worry if you have to miss them. E! News will have behind-the-scenes footage of their Today follies each night next week at 7 p.m. ET.

Baby Boomer Jitterbug Bug | BabyBoomerDaily.com

By the time Jan and I won the local ?Jitterbug? contest, the pop culture craze was becoming old shoe. The generation that came of age during World War II (those intrepid parents of baby boomers) made the jitterbug ? swing dance styles to jazzy beats ? a national youth obsession.

Swing was taken literally. Look at those old films. Girls go flying in the air. Guys twirl around like tops. These kids were acrobats. And as wild as the antics got, they danced together as a team, unlike the ultra-cool rock n? roll moves of baby boomers in the late 1960s, where a dance floor looked like a random crowd, each moving to his own drummer. It took Disco to bring back the sense of partner.

Jan and I lived in different baby boomer worlds. My Dad was a doctor and we had one the grandest houses in town. Jan?s Dad worked on the Caterpillar assembly line. His family of six squeezed into a tiny bungalow behind our estate. People thought it was our second garage or a ?play house.? Jan was tan-skinned and we could only guess at lineage. In those days, the phrase ?people of color,? if it were ever used, might have described someone with jaundice.

My family didn?t encourage or discourage my girlfriend. If the relationship had turned ?serious,? I?m sure there would have been a family ?sit-down.?

Hormones and rock n? roll brought us together. So it was with many. The new music had strong black roots; concerts in the 1950s and early 1960s had lots of ?people of color? mixing with the white crowd. The beat crossed class and religious lines as well ? part of the reason parents of baby boomers viewed it with apprehension.

For dance contests, Jan always wore a poodle skirt and tight cashmere sweater with a pointy bra that accented her 32A breasts. I knew those details because she told me. I never saw them. In those early boomer days, guys seldom got past first base. For the record, second base would have been bare breasts; third base, south of the border; a home run beyond my expectations (and expertise).

Jan and I did a standard herky-jerky dance movement that looked like early American Bandstand styles: fall back loosely holding hands and then come together sharply, pushing in. For something special, we would cuddle dance side-by-side or she would twirl around under my arm. At no point did we let go of each other. This was a popular baby? boomer style between the wild flip-the-girl-over-your-shoulder and the free form do-your-own-thing-high-as-a-kite hippie dancing.

Our prize for winning the contest was $2 and our choice of album. I took Elvis: GI Blues. Jan grabbed It?s Everly Time.

Saudi king gives women right to vote | Morocco World News

Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud attends prayers on the first day of Eid al-Fitr at Al-Safa Palace in Mecca

JEDDAH, September 25, 2011 (Reuters)

Saudi Arabia?s king announced on Sunday women would be given the right to vote and stand in elections, a bold shift in the ultra-conservative absolute monarchy as pressure for social and democratic reform sweeps the Middle East.

It was by far the biggest change in Saudi Arabia?s tightly-controlled society yet ordered by the 88-year-old Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, who took power six years ago with a reformer?s reputation but has ruled as a cautious conservative.

In practice, the measure will do little to change how the country is run: Saudi Arabia?s rulers allow elections only for half of the seats on municipal councils which have few powers. Only men will vote at the next elections which will take place next week; women will be allowed to vote in 2015.

The king did not address broader issues of women?s rights in a country where women are not allowed to drive and require a male relative?s permission to work or leave the country.

But the announcement was hailed by liberals and activists who said it raised hopes that other demands for greater democratic and social rights might one day be met.

?This is great news,? said Saudi writer and women?s rights activist Wajeha al-Huwaider. ?Women?s voices will finally be heard. Now it is time to remove other barriers like not allowing women to drive cars and not being able to function, to live a normal life without male guardians.?

In his five-minute speech, Abdullah said women would be permitted join the unelected advisory Shura Council, which vets legislation although it has no binding powers.

?Because we refuse to marginalise women in society in all roles that comply with sharia (Islamic law), we have decided, after deliberation with our senior ulama (clerics) and others? to involve women in the Shura Council as members, starting from the next term,? he said.

?Women will be able to run as candidates in the municipal election and will even have a right to vote.?

Washington, Saudi Arabia?s ally, praised the measures, saying they offered women ?new ways to participate in the decisions that affect their lives and communities.?

?The announcements made today represent an important step forward in expanding the rights of women in Saudi Arabia,? said a White House statement. ?We support King Abdullah and the people of Saudi Arabia as they undertake these and other reforms.?

Robert Lacey, author of two books about the kingdom, described the change as the first positive response to a pent-up demand for reform that has begun to emerge in Saudi Arabia as popular democracy movements spread elsewhere in the Middle East.

During the Arab Spring pro-democracy protests, Saudi activists called for demonstrations, but only tiny numbers of people responded by taking to the streets, apart from members of the Shi?ite minority in the country?s Eastern Province.

Saudi Arabia responded by barring demonstrations and by announcing nearly $130 billion (84 billion pounds) in social spending in March.

?This is the first positive, progressive speech out of the government since the Arab Spring,? said Lacey. ?First the warnings, then the payments, now the beginnings of solid reform.?

SCRUTINY

In a country where even cautious change is bitterly opposed by conservative clerics and some members of the ruling family, women?s rights have drawn scrutiny at home and from abroad.

The king did not address broader issues of women?s social rights, such as the ban on issuing driving licenses to women, which prompted small protests this summer by women who defied the authorities and drove.

Women in Saudi Arabia must also have written approval from a male guardian ? a father, husband, brother or son ? to leave the country, work or even undergo certain medical operations.

In 2002, the Saudi religious police shocked the nation and the world when they prevented schoolgirls from evacuating a burning building because they were not wearing full Islamic attire. Fifteen died.

King Abdullah has earned a reputation as a cautious reformer since he started to run the kingdom as de facto regent during the illness of his predecessor, King Fahd.

He built a new university for students of both sexes and encouraged women to participate more in the labour market. But he did little to alter the political system, which placed absolute power in the hands of a single generation of brothers since his father, state founder Abdulaziz, died in 1953.

After entering the Shura Council chamber leaning heavily on a cane on Sunday, Abdullah read only a section of a prepared statement that was later released in full by the authorities.

Tarek Fadaak, a member of the Shura Council and former chairman of the Jeddah city council, said: ?The royal decision will not be challenged? but what remains to be seen is how these directives will be applied.?

Naila Attar, who organised a campaign for women to be allowed to participate in the municipal council elections, said the move marked the beginning of progress.

?Despite the issue of the effectiveness of these councils, women?s involvement in them was necessary. Maybe after women join there will be other changes,? she said. ?It is the top of the pyramid and a step in the direction for more decisions regarding women.?

You can skip to the end and leave a response. Pinging is currently not allowed.

Fantasy Sports Fix: All the Fantasy Sports Coverage You Can ...

Each week we?ll take a look at the best of the best from RotoExperts.com?s Fantasy content.

David Gonos is taking a Fantasy Football mulligan. After just two weeks in, Gonos is re-drafting the first round. So much for sticking with that Jamaal Charles first round pick. There are a few pretty major surprises in his re-drafted first round, including Matt Forte at No. 4 and a running back at No. 12 who no one selected within the first 40-plus picks. [So-Called Fantasy Expert]

Sarah Bojarski and the RotoExperts staff go around the league, previewing each Week 3 matchup and tipping you to which players to start and which ones you should banish to your bench. Sarah checks in on the Chiefs-Chargers game and, well, if you?re a Dwayne Bowe owner you probably aren?t going to like what she has to say. [Week 3 Previews]

The lead focus in this week?s mailbag is Redskins? running back Roy Helu. Everyone wants to know, how long will it be before Helu takes over as the lead running back for the Redskins? Adam Ronis thinks it?s only a matter of time. Also, people are loading up Mr. Ronis with questions about Bills tight end Scott Chandler. He seems to be the new flavor of the month. [XPert Mailbag]

The ?Flexpert,? Pat Mayo, believes that this is the week Antonio Gates? owners were waiting for. In this week?s Flex Rankings, Mayo has both Gates and Chargers? wide receiver Vincent Jackson checking in at Nos. 6 and 4, respectively. Who doesn?t love a nice matchup against the Chiefs? [The Flexpert]

Jake Ciely isn?t one to go around forgiving people, but this time he?s giving Shonn Greene one more chance to earn his trust. As Ciely puts it, Greene has the tools to be a successful running back in the NFL, but unfortunately the stats say otherwise. Some are already bailing on Greene, opting to sit him this week against the Raiders, but Ciely is willing to give him another shot. [Hold ?Em or Fold ?Em]

Scott Engel has you covered with his weekly lineup rankings, helping you make those tough start/sit decisions in Week 3. As much as everyone loves the Chargers matchup against the Chiefs, Scott still thinks there?s one quarterback who is primed to have a better week than Philip Rivers. [Week 3 Lineup Rankings]

In Bob Lung?s search for Fantasy consistency, he?s starting to see some surprising early trends. Sure, we all know about Cam Newton, but even the numbers couldn?t have predicted Ryan Fitzpatrick would be this consistent and DeAngelo Williams would be this awful in the early weeks. Check out the full report, with consistency ratings for each position in Lung?s Quality Games Scores piece. [Quality Games Scores]

Who is the freak of the week, according to Mike Gilbert? I can tell you one thing for sure, it?s not Jamaal Charles. Nor is it anyone on the Chiefs. This week Mike also reexamines the Washington Redskins offense, a team he completely avoided throughout his drafts. Not even Mike can keep away from Sexy Rexy at this point! [Hot Freaks]

Adam Zdroik is back once again with his trade market report. He?s examining the wants for players like DeAngelo Williams and Roddy White and seeing if he can make sense of their trade values. There?s a lot of good value to be had in the market. See who ?Big Z? thinks should be on your radar if you?re looking to make a move. [Stock Report]

Rays top Jays to keep heat on Boston

David Price, Ben Zobrist

updated 6:21 p.m. ET Sept. 25, 2011

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Tampa Bay Rays are focusing on their playoff push rather than the shocking slide of the Boston Red Sox.

B.J. Upton and Ben Zobrist homered in the first inning to back Wade Davis, and the Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-2 Sunday to pull within a half-game of the Red Sox for the AL wild-card lead.

"It's more about the ascension of the Rays right now," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. "Obviously, they're struggling a bit, and that happens. But from our perspective, it's more important what we do. It's fortuitous that they've had a hard time, but I love the fact that we're taking care of business."

Evan Longoria and Kelly Shoppach also homered for the Rays, who have closed despite going just 14-10 in September.

Nine games back of the Red Sox heading into play on Sept. 4, Tampa Bay would move into a tie for the wild-card lead if the Yankees completed a sweep of Boston in their day-night doubleheader.

"The more pressure you put on yourself, the tougher it is to play baseball, which is probably what the Red Sox are doing right now," Davis said. "There's probably a lot of pressure on them. They're playing tense and they're not playing their game. As long as we can stay relaxed and understand our position, we can just keep it going."

No major league team has overcome a nine-game deficit in September to claim a postseason berth. The closest was the 1964 World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals, who trailed the Philadelphia Phillies by 8 1-2 games on Sept. 3.

Tampa Bay closes at home against the Yankees, while the Red Sox play at Baltimore.

"I know we have a tough team coming in, and we really have to play well," Tampa Bay's Johnny Damon said. "It'll be a tough go, but I think we're feeling good about ourselves and fortunately for us, there's no off-day.

Davis (11-10) allowed two runs and three hits in eight innings, and Joel Peralta finished for his sixth save in eight chances. The Rays have won 27 games in a row when scoring five runs or more.

Toronto's Jose Bautista, the major league leader with 43 homers, bruised a spot just below his left knee on Zobrist's first-inning homer, hitting the right-field fence hard while attempting to make a catch. Mark Teahen hit for Bautista in the sixth inning.

"It's sore right now," Bautista said. "It started getting more sore and stiff to run. It was hurting when I was running."

Blue Jays manager John Farrell doesn't expect Bautista to play in Monday night's game at the Chicago White Sox. The slugger hasn't ruled himself out from playing again before the regular season ends Wednesday.

"We feel like we dodged a bullet," Farrell said. "It could have been something much more severe. There's a little bit of a gap in that padding out there, and there's a little bit of exposed metal and that was the impact."

Upton homered with one out, and Zobrist hit an inside-the-park homer to right with two outs, also off Brett Cecil (4-11).

David Cooper had an RBI double in the second, but Longoria's two-run homer made it 4-1 in the third. He has driven in 82 runs over his last 95 games.

After Toronto's Dewayne Wise had a solo homer in the fifth, Shoppach hit a sixth-inning shot.

Cecil gave up four runs and five hits in 3 1-3 innings. He is 0-7 with a 5.16 ERA in his last 10 starts.

NOTES: RHP James Shields (15-12), who leads the majors with 11 complete games this season, will start Monday night's game against the Yankees. He will be followed in the series by Jeremy Hellickson (13-10) and David Price (12-13). "Everything is lined up properly right now," Maddon said. "Let's just go out and play, and see what happens." ... Blue Jays CF Colby Rasmus was late scratch due to fulike symptoms. 1B Adam Lind, who left the team Friday for the birth of his child, missed his third straight game. ... Farrell will miss Monday night's game with the Chicago White Sox to be with his 20-year old son Luke, who is having scheduled surgery. ... Zobrist has four homers in his last eight games after going 39 games without one. ... Farrell said it's becoming more unlikely that SS Yunel Escobar (left elbow) will play again this season. ... Toronto RHP Dustin McGowan (0-1) and White Sox RHP Dylan Axelrod (0-0) will pitch Monday's series opener.

Having A Bet Are Nasty | AutoRoll - Kids and Teens

gioco giochi are evil and most parents agree. However you would expect that many kids disagree. Drinking a wine everyday isn t good but drinking a glass on weekly basis is sure to offer benefits. The same with gioco giochi, several hours every week could in fact be beneficial.

What really could be these benefits?

Learning a profession. Yes there are several games that teach people how to perform job. Simulators are a instance. Learning the concepts of flying and understanding how to manage an aircraft are fantastic.

Gaining knowledge. Today there are numerous trivia games out there. It is possible to learn anywhere between world history to music, science, sports as well as potpourri. Some more useful them others but surely you encounter seen people been asked about events and not just use a clue.

Physical skill. You only should think of the wii games to understand there presently exists very useful games to assist us to have in shape. But even learning complex moves on video game design degree console can help, imagine just how much finger excursive you encounter playing Tekken for example keeping a new releases of wii?s and kinect systems our living areas are becoming our gyms.

Logic. Learning logic may be challenging and games like fiver or Factory balls are solid to produce your logical thinking. Should you haven?t are aware of these games how about play checkers or reversi online.

Problem solving is another one you can learn from games. Many of the parents will really know ?Bert in pigeon trouble? Probably better know will be the math games which teach kids additions and subtractions.

Strategy. Surely you must not learn strategy I hear you?re thinking that however you actually can. There many strategy games online as well as some really big ones too. StartCraft and whoa for example but as well Sid Meier?s Civilisation all involve strategies. Some elements like time management anticipation and preparedness, relation building and money management are merely one or two belongings you can learn. Social interaction Some games require someone to connect to other players, converse with them and make agreements. You should undoubtedly understand how to recognise people it is possible to trust and who will cheat you and it?s all inside a safe environment.

To sum it. gioco giochi are often blamed for violence in kids and a barrier to some better life. This is certainly far from the fact as long as you play the right games with moderation. But if your kids or teenagers struggle with math or have problems working out problems some games can be brilliant. Just don?t by senseless violence and crime games.

Veracruz State police and Mexican army soldiers guard the perimeter around the site of a state prosecutors convention in the Gulf port city of Veracruz, Mexico Thursday Sept. 22, 2011. (AP Photo/Felix Marquez)

(AP) ? Despite intense security for a national meeting of Mexico's state prosecutors and tough talk from top cops, criminals dumped more bodies in Veracruz three days after gunmen left 35 corpses on a major avenue during rush hour.

A navy official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Friday that police found 11 bodies around town Thursday, even as this Gulf of Mexico port city ramped up security for the prosecutors meeting by deploying hundreds of soldiers, sailors and police on the streets.

It was unclear who left the most recent group of bodies. Officials believe the New Generation gang was behind the dumping of 35 bodies Tuesday on a busy street just a half-mile (kilometer) from the convention hall as a grim message to the Zetas drug cartel, which dominates the region.

Authorities had established a security perimeter around the metropolitan area, with soldiers in trucks stopping people in town they considered suspicious. The prosecutors meeting was Thursday and Friday.

Residents in Veracruz said this week's horrors had only deepened the fear scaring visitors away from the tourist destination and keeping some residents at home at night.

In August, panicked parents rushed to fetch their children from Veracruz schools after a couple posted Twitter messages warning of nonexistent drug cartel attacks on banks and schools.

"Each time, it's worse, and I don't know if it's going to get better," said a 19-year-old student, who like other people interviewed in Veracruz refused to let their names be used for fear of reprisals.

Another man said he felt crime in town had worsened over the past four months.

"Terrifying, terrifying," he said, reacting to Tuesday's find.

"It's among themselves that they're fighting," the man said of drug gangs. "I don't know if they're the Zetas or the Y's or the X's."

The New Generation gang is believed to be linked to Mexico's most-wanted drug lord, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, who heads the Sinaloa cartel, according to a U.S. law enforcement official, who spoke earlier in the week on condition of anonymity for security reasons.

Mexican federal Attorney General Marisela Morales said drug dealing was a factor in the mass killing in Veracruz. The port is the biggest city in Veracruz state, which is a main transit route for cocaine and migrants coming from the Guatemalan border.

According to Veracruz state prosecutors, the majority of the 35 victims identified had police records that included kidnappings, extortion, murder and drug dealing. Authorities have not released their identities, but have said one victim was a local police officer who had gone missing.

The 35 bound, seminude and tortured bodies were dumped beneath an overpass during rush hour Tuesday as gunmen waved weapons at horrified motorists.

"It's no surprise to anybody that the criminal gangs are fighting to control turf and dominate drug dealers," Morales said.

A Veracruz restaurant owner, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Mexico's security situation isn't improving because most state governments aren't coordinating with President Felipe Calderon and federal authorities in the crackdown on drug cartels. He said his restaurant has seen business drop by 35 percent in just the past month in large part because of the violence.

"There is no leadership," the restaurant owner said. "It's the president alone."

Although a navy official reported the finding of 11 more bodies, Veracruz Gov. Javier Duarte denied Friday that any other corpses had turned up.

"There is nothing confirmed and they are only rumors," Duarte told reporters.

Late Thursday, state police officers beat up three photojournalists who were outside a morgue and demanded they erase all the photos they had taken.

Duarte said it was illegal to take pictures there but that he would ask prosecutors to organize a visit by the media.

Despite the violence, some tourists went ahead with travel plans to Veracruz. On Thursday, dozens were strolling along the city's oceanfront, and buses brought other visitors to the seaside strip.

"You can't ignore the reality, but you can't stop what you have to do," said Gerardo Galvez, a Mexico City resident visiting the city with his wife. "We can't lock ourselves up. You have to continue with life."

More than 35,000 people have been killed in drug war-related violence around Mexico since Calderon launched his offensive in late 2006, according to government figures. Some groups say more than 40,000 have died.

In the Pacific coast state of Sinaloa, gunmen killed a nephew of the Juarez drug cartel's purported leader, Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, authorities said.

Vicente Castillo Carrillo, 18, was driving on a dirt road Thursday night in the town of Navolato when assailants opened fire, killing him on the spot, Sinaloa state Attorney General Marco Higuera said.

Also in western Mexico, soldiers dismantled a big lab in the state of Jalisco where crystal meth was made, the Defense Department said in a statement Friday.

The lab at a ranch in the town of Zapotlanejo was inside a four-story building that could hold at least 30 workers and it housed several warehouses. Soldiers seized 400 pounds (180 kilograms) of crystal meth and 145 tons (132 metric tons) of precursor chemicals, the military said.

Discovery Brings Us One Step Closer To "Milking" Pigeons

Are you tired of boring old milk in your cereal? Is the half and half in your coffee leaving you flat? If so, the recent discovery of the gene responsible for pigeon crop "lactation" might be the good news you've been waiting for. While mammals are the only animals that produce true milk, a number of birds produce a nutritious, liquid "crop milk" for their chicks. From the article: "The idea of drinking pigeon milk may bring a shudder to every sane and rational person in the world, but it's actually quite nutritious. Although it's high in fat, to help the young squabs develop fast, it's also packed full of antioxidants and immune-system-boosting proteins."

HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio, we go ears-on (video)

Guess who's back? HTC let us play with the new and improved Sensation XE in London last night and we even managed to find a secluded spot to bop our heads to the integrated Beats Audio and packaged YourBeats headphones. The XE is very similar to the original 4.3-inch flagship Sensation in terms of hardware, except there's a 300MHz clock-speed bump to 1.5GHz, a slightly larger 1750mAh battery and also a packaged 16GB (instead of 8GB) microSD card. But aside from that, we expect it'll be the audio credentials and related marketing hype that will attract most attention when the device reaches shelves later this month. Current Sensation owners probably won't even consider the upgrade unless they're chronic Dr. Dre fans, but what about those with more sticky icky icky devices? Should they be enticed by all the fuss? Click past the break if you think rap's changed and you want know how we feel about it.

Update: HTC has been in touch to clarify that this device is not coming to the US. An intriguing decision to say the least.

SKorean reporters detained by China near NKorea (AP)

SEOUL, South Korea ? Chinese authorities detained a group of South Korean journalists and others for a fourth day Friday on suspicion of spying while on a reporting trip near China's border with North Korea, officials in Seoul said.

The Chosun Ilbo newspaper first reported the detentions Friday, saying that four journalists from the newspaper JoongAng Ilbo, a researcher and a guide were taken into custody Tuesday in a military restricted zone near the Tumen River that marks the border.

Three South Korean Foreign Ministry officials confirmed that JoongAng Ilbo reporters were detained near the river, and said they were being held at a hotel. But they disputed parts of the Chosun Ilbo account, saying five people, not six, were detained, and they would not confirm the number of journalists nor whether they were caught inside a restricted military zone.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the sensitivity of efforts to secure the reporters' release. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman in Beijing said the agency was looking into the reports, but otherwise refused to comment. JoongAng Ilbo declined comment.

China is always touchy about border security and in the best of circumstances dislikes snooping by foreign reporters. The border with ally North Korea is particularly sensitive, with many North Koreans sneaking across to look for work, find food or flee poverty and repression.

One of the South Korean officials said the reporters were traveling on tourist visas. China requires foreign reporters to obtain journalist visas if they want to report inside the country and has expelled or jailed reporters working without proper credentials.

In 2003, China imprisoned a South Korean freelance journalist on charges of human trafficking. Seok Jae-hyun, who was photographing North Korean defectors he was helping to escape, was released after 14 months in prison.

One South Korean official said he expected the latest case of detention to last at least a week.

The two Koreas fought a civil war to a stalemate a half-century ago, and conditions inside closed-off North Korea are of great interest to more prosperous South Korea.

The border between China and North Korea often draws foreign journalists who hope for a glimpse into the impoverished North. In 2009, American journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee were arrested on the North Korean side of the border for trespassing while reporting on the sex trade. North Korea released them 4 1/2 months later after former President Bill Clinton visited Pyongyang to seek their freedom.

Real Points ? Blog Archive ? Sam Kartalis: A Commercial Real ...

Sam Kartalis

Everyone is talking about a ?double-dip? recession, but I?d like to think that feeling runs counter to what?s happening in commercial real estate.?I?ve witnessed some good-sized land sales recently, along with a growing group of income properties closing, and I sense a trending upward.

As soon as single-family land?sites hit the streets with realistic prices, they?re gone! And most of the in fill?single-family sites have already been snapped up.

Single-family homes may be a laggard currently, but commercial real estate looks like a good bet for asset appreciation, especially when compared to stocks, bonds, and cash accounts.

For those reasons, I believe commercial real estate is reviving!

The Top 7 Reasons Celebrities Are Flocking To Private Vacation ...

From Brad and Angelina, to Madonna, President Barack Obama, movie, music and TV stars are spending their vacation time away from the crowds and the cameras, and hiding away in luxurious, private vacation homes.? Here?s the top 7 reasons why!

1. Privacy

A vacation isn?t much of a vacation when you?re surrounded by adoring fans screaming for your autograph, or ducking paparazzi around every corner.? Which is why you don?t see major movie and TV stars spending their vacation time at hotels.? Instead, famous faces know that in order to really get away from it all, the key is to check in to a private vacation home.?? Unlike hotels that cater to the public, a vacation home offers guests a real escape from the outside world, with a level of total privacy a hotel just can?t match.? So they can bare all by the pool without worrying about winding up on the cover of a tabloid next week.

2. Space For Their Stuff

The rich and famous don?t typically travel light.? They may be heading out of town to get away from it all, but at the same time, they need to make sure they?re ready for anything ? from lunch with the big-name director who happens to be in town to a formal dinner party on a yacht.?? That?s why the stars tend to bring MORE than what they need, just in case.? Which is why they?re bypassing the big hotels and settling in to roomy vacation homes ? where they have plenty of space for the tuxedo, the ball gown AND the scuba gear.

3. Room For An Entourge

Just as they don?t travel light, celebs also don?t travel alone.? There?s the personal assistant, the personal trainer, the hair and makeup guy (or gal), plus family, friends, acquaintances and hangers on?in other words, more people than you can possibly fit in even the largest hotel suite.? And that?s why the stars are bringing the whole entourage to roomy vacation homes ? where everyone can spread out and enjoy their time together.

]]>

4. Exclusivity

Celebrities like to stay on the cutting edge of trends ? they don?t follow the herd and do what everybody else is doing.? Why should they, when they can afford to set the trends and set themselves apart from the crowd?? So instead of following the masses to whatever resort is popular each season, the stars prefer to create a vacation that is uniquely, exclusively theirs by escaping to a luxury vacation home.?? After all, what could be more exclusive than your own, private paradise, reserved only for you and the people you want around you?

5. Peace and Quiet

Let?s face it ? people are noisy.?? And people who have a lot of money to spend on fancy hotel rooms are no exception.? Their kids fight and splash in the pool.? They have parties at all hours of the night.?? They argue, they laugh, they basically live their lives.? Which is fine for them.? But if you?re on vacation trying to get away from it all, it?s not necessarily fine for you.? No wonder so many celebrities are skipping noisy hotels altogether and opting to stay in peaceful, private vacation homes.? That way, if a wild party keeps them up all night, at least it will be their wild party!

6. Freedom

A vacation is the time to do what you want to do when you want to do it ? and no one knows that better than celebrities, who are used to getting their own way.? But even the most luxurious hotel has limits.? Hankering for a late-night swim after the pool has closed?? No can do.? Feel like spending the day in your bathrobe without getting dressed?? You?ll not want to leave the privacy of your room if you stay in a hotel but a vacation home gives you the freedom to spend your vacation the way you like.? And if that means eating a grilled cheese sandwich in the pool at 2:30am, go for it!

7. Luxury

In travel, as in their day-to-day lives, celebrities demand the best.? And they?re finding the best in luxurious, comfortable vacation homes.? Dining rooms where they can entertain friends.? Spacious living rooms where they can spread out and enjoy all the comforts of home.? Their own, private swimming pools and Jacuzzis.? ?With so many options, there?s no longer any reason to settle for less than the best.? Which probably explains why, when it comes to travel, vacation homes are topping the list of celebrity trends.

So now you see why the rich and famous are making vacation home rentals such a fast-growing travel trend.? And the best part is, these advantages aren?t just for celebrities.

To learn more about how YOU can vacation like a star in your own private, luxurious vacation home, go to www.FloridaLeisure.com.? And get ready for what promises to be the vacation of a lifetime.

A More Perfect Union: Tom Six Discusses 'The Human Centipede II ...

It is entirely possible ? maybe even likely ? that you know the plot of Tom Six?s horror movie ?The Human Centipede (First Sequence)? without having seen a single frame of it. After receiving a modest theatrical release in the United States last year, the film has become a cult sensation as a video-on-demand offering and been referred to on mainstream shows like ?South Park? and ?The Colbert Report? because of its simple, memorable and thoroughly unnerving premise: a mad doctor who surgically combines three human captives into a single organism by stitching them together, mouth to anus.

Mr. Six?s sequel, ?The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence),? about an obsessed ?Human Centipede? fan, Martin, who tries to recreate the original movie?s ?experiment? in a dingy London warehouse, is already notorious, weeks before IFC Films plans to release it on Oct. 7. When it was presented over the summer to the British Board of Film Classification, the equivalent of the Motion Picture Association of America, the board refused to give it any rating at all, meaning that the movie cannot be shown or sold legally in that country. Explaining its decision, the board said: ?There is little attempt to portray any of the victims in the film as anything other than objects to be brutalized, degraded and mutilated for the amusement and arousal of the central character, as well as for the pleasure of the audience.? It added that any further editing of the film would not make it acceptable for presentation.

That hasn?t dissuaded Mr. Six, a 38-year-old Dutch filmmaker, who plans to open ?The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence)? at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Tex., on Thursday and is preparing to make a third and final film in an anticipated trilogy. He spoke with ArtsBeat recently by phone from Amsterdam, and in these excerpts from that conversation, he discusses the making of the ?Human Centipede? movies and his reactions to the British ban.

Q.

Where in the world did the idea for ?The Human Centipede? come from?

A.

One day I was watching television with friends, and there was a really nasty child molester on television, and as a joke, I said they should stitch his mouth to the [rear] of a fat truck driver as a punishment. And everybody was laughing. But that idea kept coming in my head. I thought, that?s the ultimate horror.

Q.

Once you?d written the script, did you find it at all challenging to cast the film?

A.

It was a real hell to get the actors. We did the casting in New York, and so many actors refused when I told them the idea. They thought I was a European nutcase. So many left, immediately. The smart ones, they stayed. They wanted to know more. We came to the moment that they had to sit on their hands and knees, very close to a butt in front of them, and then, again, so many girls dropped off, because they couldn?t do it. They went to acting school or whatever, and they thought, ?My God, do I have to show this to my parents??

Q.

The film has since insinuated itself into pop culture in all kinds of unexpected ways. Did you see the ?South Park? episode that parodied the movie?

A.

Oh, yeah. It?s amazing. It?s an honor that they did that. It?s so cool, if people make parodies out of your film. They made a porn version in L.A. It?s amazing.

Q.

The term ?torture porn? is often used to describe contemporary horror movies like ?Hostel? and ?Saw.? Would you be offended to see ?The Human Centipede? labeled ?torture porn??

A.

I don?t have any problem with that, because I actually like the term. I see porno films, of course, and I like them, I have no problem with that at all. And there have been so many horror films, and that?s all torture and misery. That?s the genre. I kind of like that they combine it. I think my film is a torture porn with European art sauce or something.

Q.

By giving the first ?Human Centipede? the subtitle ?First Sequence,? you were already indicating more movies to come. So what do you do for an encore?

A.

I made Part I very much psychological. A lot of things happen in your head and you don?t actually see it on the screen. In PartII, I really wanted to make it more graphic, show everything that I didn?t show in Part I. Because I see so many horror films that have a sequel, then the sequel fails because it?s like a copy of the first one. Most of the time it?s not better, or it?s not original, and then it fails. When I was doing promotion for Part I and starting to write Part II, so many people at festivals all over the world, they said, ?What if some maniac out there tries to copy your idea?? And then I knew that?s exactly the idea I must pursue.

Q.

Was that a genuine concern of yours, that someone might see ?The Human Centipede? and try to duplicate it in real life? Do you have to exercise restraint in your films because of these kinds of possibilities?

A.

No, I think as a filmmaker, film is of course art and entertainment, but as a filmmaker you?d never be restricted by what might happen. You?re creating a fantasy. It?s all fake and make-believe, of course. And if some crazy person out there copies something from a film, that person is already insane. So it could have been anything that triggered him. I think artists should never worry about that, and just make the thing they want to make.

Q.

Did the reputation that you?d earned from the original ?Human Centipede? make it easier or harder to get the sequel made?

The production process was oh so much easier. As you can imagine, when we did the castings for the people inside the centipede, so many actors wanted to be in there. At the auditions they came in and they sat on their hands and knees right away. ?When can I start??

Of course, the villain was more difficult, because people who?ve seen Part I really admire Dr. Heiter, and that?s what I really didn?t want. I want the complete opposite of Dr. Heiter. I had this very specific character in my mind for the Martin character, and I saw a lot of people but none of them made it. And when Laurence came in, I thought, my God, that?s him, that?s him. He looks amazing. And then I asked him to rape a chair.

Q.

Really? Why?

A.

Because I wanted to see, is he capable of giving it all as an actor? That?s very important for me. And he did it, and he did it so convincingly and he had no shame whatsoever. And I thought, that?s it, that?s the guy.

Q.

How much of your shoot time on the sequel was spent filming the actual human-centipede portion of the film?

A.

I don?t know exactly the percentage. Just like in Part I, I saved it for last. I shot all the other stuff first. A little less than half of the shooting time. We had chairs everywhere, because there are people in the centipede, in ?Part II,? that are more heavy than the thin characters in Part I. They suffered for it. They enjoyed every moment but it was really tough on them.

Q.

Now that people know what ?The Human Centipede? is, did you run into people who did not want you filming in certain locations or who did not want to contribute other resources because they didn?t want to be associated with the sequel?

A.

I never encountered things like that. What I do encounter at festivals, and on the Internet especially, is that people who see the film become so very angry and emotional about it. I got so many death threats via Internet, Facebook and stuff. Because people can?t handle it. People, somehow they think I?m degrading humanity and they can?t see it?s separate. At festivals I had people that were even afraid to look at me. And I said, ?It?s just make-believe. It?s all fun, and the actors had fun, and it?s not real.? But people are so intensely angry.

Q.

Are you a weird person in your private life? Do you sleep suspended upside-down like a bat?

A.

No, no. I?m a victim of a very happy childhood, I think. I lead a very, very normal life. Usually people who make horror films are the most friendly people in the world. They just have an amazing and strange imagination, but I couldn?t hurt a mouse in real life. My father and mother were divorced, and I was raised by my mother, and she lived with my grandparents in a very big house near Amsterdam.

Q.

You work closely with your sister, Ilona, who produces your movies. I have a sister, and I?m not sure I could speak candidly with her about the ideas in the ?Human Centipede? films.

A.

I totally understand what you mean. But my sister?s just as crazy as I am, I think. She always comes up with crazy ideas. Even my mother loves the films. She?s seen the first one and she loves it. I told her the story of the second one and she loved it.

Q.

When you learned that the British Board of Film Classification had rejected ?The Human Centipede II,? how did you feel? Did it make you reconsider what you had done?

A.

When I heard about it, I immediately got two strong reactions. I thought, my God, this is brilliant for the marketing. And on the other end, I got really upset. Because how can it be that in 2011, people can?t see a film and judge for themselves whether to watch it or not? That?s really something from a dinosaur era. Now you have Internet and people can get copies from all over the world. So you can never stop the U.K. public from seeing that film. And then when they said it?s uneditable, it?s crazy. I always thought the British people had so much humor, so I?m really disappointed that the B.B.F.C. didn?t see the humor in the film at all.

Q.

Do you make your films with the deliberate intention of trying to get people upset?

A.

I like to make controversial films. I like that people talk about your work. I would hate it if I would make a film, and people wonder what to have for dinner when the film is over and not think about your film. I love it that people talk about it, hate it, can?t sleep over it.

Q.

But wouldn?t you rather that people react by saying, ?What a well-shot scene? or ?What a well-acted performance? than by saying, ?That movie should never have been made??

A.

I?d rather have those last remarks you said. I love that. Because if people say it?s a nice shot or it?s a nice story line, it?s so general. You can say that with almost any film you see. And things like, ?this film should never have been made,? that?s exceptional.

Q.

But what if your actions make it harder for other directors to make the kinds of movies they want to make?

A.

That?s true. But as a filmmaker, you have to look for new boundaries and see if you can make stories, create things that people haven?t seen before. And you cross the line, maybe, in moral terms, or things that go too far. But I think a lot of horror makers, they get new energy from this and they can think, ?Hey, I have to create something new also.? Because so many horror films are repeated over and over and over, with monsters, with knives, it?s all the same. There?s not many filmmakers in the horror genre that really make original stuff, that make way for new ideas.

Q.

In its rejection of ?The Human Centipede II,? the British board cited a scene in which the main character is seen ?wrapping barbed wire around his penis and raping the woman at the rear of the ?centipede.? ? But I did not see that scene in the version of the film I was shown. Is that being edited out of the American release?

A.

In America, IFC knows that best. They have two versions that they are going to release. I don?t know exactly how they?re going to do that, but there will be two different versions. You can ask IFC how they see that, how that want to do that.

Q.

Who are your favorite artists? Whose work do you look up to?

A.

I really love comedies. I really like the guy who made ?Borat? and ?Bruno,? Sacha Baron Cohen. As a filmmaker, Lars von Trier, I really admire his body of work, what he?s doing. I like a guy like Werner Herzog. One of my favorite actors of all time is Klaus Kinski.

Q.

You?re already planning a third ?Human Centipede? film. What can you say about it at this stage?

A.

I really wanted to make a second one, and overall I wanted to make three. Because three films make a human centipede, you can actually place them together and they form one film of four and a half hours. I have some really cool things for Part 3 in store. I have one film more to show some more crazy ideas. But then I am fed up with ?Human Centipede? so I don?t want to do it anymore.
